Quantum Software Consortium

3rd Quantum Training Days on quantum bits on 10-11 October

In this mini course we will learn about the characterization of noise in qubits and quantum gates.

The lectures will be given by Arghavan Safavi-Naini (QuSoft, IoP, UvA) and Jonas Helsen (QuSoft, CWI).

Arghavan Safavi Naini                Jonas Helsen

In this mini course we will learn about the characterization of noise in qubits and quantum gates. Jonas Helsen will cover topics 1-4, Arghavan Safavi Naini will cover 5-7:

1. The basics of noise in quantum computation, and different metrics (such as fidelity, diamond distance, unitarity) to quantify noise.
2. Standard characterisation protocols like state and process tomography.
3. More modern protocols such as randomized benchmarking and gate set tomography, how they solve certain problems the standard approaches have, and how to interpret their output.
4. Shadow tomography in the Huang-Kueng-Preskill sense. Why it works (even though it shouldn't) and what you can do with it.

5. Trapped-ion quantum computers: what makes a good qubit, how do we address qubits, and how to make gates.
6. Quantum simulation in atomic, molecular, and optical systems.
7. Modeling experiments: open quantum systems, quantum trajectories, and phase space techniques.
A few things to keep in mind.
  • We would like you to attend this training. The Quantum Software Consortium offers to pay the costs for you (~ 80 euro per person). If you register, we expect you to show up and attend this training.
  • The hostel has dorms, so you share a bedroom. There will be separate rooms for women and men. Please let Doutzen Abma know if you do not feel comfortable in this.
  • There is no public transport to the stayokay. Therefore we arrange a QSC bus from Leiden Central Station to the stayokay on October 10 around 9:45. On October 11 around 16:15 the QSC bus will return to Leiden Central Station.
When: Monday October 10th, 2022  -  Tuesday October 11th, 2022
Time: 10:00 - 17:00
Where: Stayokay Noordwijk
